Packing…

Kit decided it was time she thought about packing for the trip.  She wasn’t sure what to take though, the most traveling she had done recently was back and forth between here and her parents home in Cincinnati.  She decided maybe it would be a good idea to get some help, so she went downstairs to see if any of the other girls had any ideas.  First she stopped outside of Cassandra’s bedroom.  After hearing the conversation, she decided maybe she’d better ask someone else as it seemed Cassandra, Shivan and Fiona were in a rather heated discussion about something that Kit didn’t understand.

“I think Euclidian geometry is much better than Pythagorean geometry!” “No! No! No! Pythagorean geometry is better–it’s called the Pythagorean Theorem not the Euclidian Theorem!”

Kit continued down the hall to where Alya and Shivan’s room is.  When she looked in the door, she could see Alya showing Kanani the new bag she’d picked up.

“Isn’t this bag adorable? I got it at Target, it was the last one they had in pink.” said Alya. “Oh, hey Kit, come on in!”

packing-3

“Hi guys!” replied Kit. “I need some help, I’m having a hard time with packing for the trip. I thought maybe since you both have traveled some, you might be able to help me?”

“Sure!” exclaimed both Alya and Kanani. “Go get your suitcase and bring it in here and we’ll get you all straightened out.”

Kit ran up to her bedroom and got her suitcase.

“Let’s set it up here on the bed,” said Alya.  “Kanani, if you could go get some of the clothing out of the wardrobe that you think she’ll need, that would be a huge help.”

Kanani came back with several items.

Kit wondered outloud. “Guys, do you really think I’m going to need all of that?” “Oh, most definitely!” replied Kanani. “You don’t want to be away from home and find out you need something and you don’t have it!”

The girls continued adding things to the pile.
packing-8“You’re going to need sandals, flats, boots, sneakers…”

packing-9

“…several pairs of pajamas and a bathrobe…”

Finally Kit couldn’t take it anymore. “STOP!!! GUYS! I’m only going for four days!!!”

Alya and Kanani turned and looked at Kit and in unison responded. “Oh.”

“Thanks guys, but I think I can handle this on my own!”

Do you have a tendency to over-pack when going on a trip?  I’ve never been one to get too carried away, but over the years I’ve managed to pack less and less and on our last trip to Ireland, both Mr. Flo and I took only a rolling carry-on bag and a shoulder bag.  I think Kit’s going to fit right in on this trip!

The Hula Lesson

Fiona and Kanani were having a relaxing weekend, watching TV together, playing with the dogs and just having fun.  Kanani was also teaching Fiona how to play the ukulele that she got her for Christmas.  During their lesson, Kanani got an idea.  “Would you like to learn how to do the hula dance?”  “Oh wow,” replied Fiona, “that does sound like fun.  Sure!”  Then they thought it might be fun to invite Louisa over too, so Fiona grabbed her phone and gave her a call.

“Hello?”

“Hey Louisa, it’s Fiona!”

“Oh, hi!  How’s it going?”

“Great, would you like to come over and hang out with us?  We are just goofing off, Kanani has been teaching me how to play my ukulele.”

“Sure, I’d love to come over.  I’m bored at home.”

“Sounds awesome!  Bring your swimsuit too.”

“Huh?  It’s freezing out!”

“Just bring it, don’t ask questions.”

“Okay??  I’ll be over shortly.”

About 15 minutes passed until Louisa turned up at the front door.  “I’m here!  I still don’t understand why you told me to bring my swimsuit though.”

Fiona told her to go into her bedroom and put it on.  The girls already had theirs on.

When Louisa came out of the bedroom, Fiona handed her a bathtowel.  “Tie this around your waist like I have mine.  Kanani is going to give us a hula lesson!”

“Oh fun!” replied Louisa.  “I’ve always wanted to learn how to hula!”

Kanani explained to the girls that the hand movements were all symbolic of different aspects of nature: rain, sun, mountain, ocean.  The foot and hip movements are combined with the hand movements to create a dance.  Many hula dances are considered to be a religious performance because they are honoring a Hawaiian god.

“Wow, this is all so interesting!  I’m so glad I came over!” replied Louisa.

Kanani then showed them a couple of movements and steps.

Fiona and Louisa both agreed that it was a lot more work than they realized and had a whole new respect for Kanani and her abilities. “You know what we should do sometime? Invite some of the other girls over and have a Hawaiian themed party with Hawaiian foods and traditions. We could teach them to dance too!” exclaimed Fiona.

Kanani thought it sounded like a great idea, perhaps one day in the summer when the weather wasn’t so cold!

Have you ever done the hula or been to a demonstration of it? I vaguely remember learning some of the moves of the dance in gym glass when I was in grade school, back when Hawaiian culture was very popular thanks to the original “Hawaii 5-0” tv series as well as singer Don Ho.

A New Friend

The girls here always seem to be making new friends.  Whether it’s the girls in the neighborhood (Zara, Abby, Louisa), the girls from Pittsburgh (Zoee, Nancy, Felicity, Raynia or Trudy) or the girls from across the state (Kirsten, Melody), there never seems to be a shortage of someone to play with, talk to or text.  I mentioned at the beginning of the school year that Louisa and Shivan weren’t the only new kids at the school, this year there were 10 total, which is a lot for a small school like Kennedy.  Cassandra is in quite a few classes with one of them, her name is Fiona, and they have gotten to be great friends.  A few days ago Cassandra asked Fiona if she’d like to come to the house to hang out.  Fiona thought it sounded terrific, and you can imagine how surprised they both were when they came to realize that she only lives two blocks away!  Something tells me that Fiona will be spending a lot of time here with the girls.

Fiona’s family moved here from Columbus, Ohio. Her dad was the station manager for the PBS television station there, but due to budget cutbacks, his job changed a lot and he decided to look for something else. He is now working for a local television station, producing the morning news show but also does some work for our area PBS station. Her mom is a pharmacist and has a job at the same hospital as Zara and Abby’s mom. She has an older brother, Steven, who is away at his first year at college. She doesn’t have any pets because her brother is allergic, but now that he isn’t around all the time, she is trying to convince her parents to let her get a hamster. She is a terrific volleyball player and also loves to snowboard. She was really excited to learn that the school has a ski/snowboard club that takes regular trips to some of the area ski resorts, there weren’t any close when she lived in Columbus.

She came over Saturday afternoon after lunch. Cassandra showed her around the house, and then they headed to her room so they could work on a homework project together.

“You don’t have to share a room with any of the other girls?” asked Fiona.
“No, Kit and I both lucked out and have our own rooms. I did share with Alya when she first came here, but it was too crowded, so now she and Shivan share a bigger bedroom.”
“It’s really nice, very cozy.”

Then Fiona turned around…
new friend 2
“WHOAAAA!!! Look at all of this Minion stuff!!”

Cassandra giggled.  “Some of it I got as presents, some of it I saved my own money to get.  Do you like Minions?”

“Like?” asked Fiona.  “I LOVE Minions!”

new friend 3
“This shelf with all the figures on it is so cool!” “Thanks!” replied Cassandra. “I just got that, mom found it somewhere and thought it would be perfect to display my collection. I don’t know what I’m going to do if I get anymore.” (neither do I…)

The girls had fun the rest of the afternoon, playing with the Minions, snuggling with Chester and doing their homework. She had fun with Chester, she told Cassandra that it was nice to play with him. I couldn’t help but think, “oh dear, just what we need, another Minion crazy girl.” I can’t wait until the movie comes out on video, I definitely see a party with at least the 3 of us!”

Do you and your friends have anything you really like to do together? Or an outdoor activity you like to do? When I was growing up, my friends and I were all horse-crazy, we lived and breathed horses. Everything from fantasizing about having our own horses, to actually riding sometimes. I have some great memories of fun things I did with my friends over the years!

In case you are wondering where I got the shelf for all of Cassandra’s Minions, it is a clear drawer organizer I picked up at TJ Maxx!
