Meet the Pets!

I’ve been wanting to do this post for a while, but I’ve had so many things to write about, it’s been sitting on the back burner. Finally Coconut looked me square in the eye and said “NOW!” in that forceful, West Highland Terrier way, so I had to give in. 😉

We have quite a few pets here for the girls, all dogs at the moment. I’m allergic to cats, so I guess that is a good thing. The oldest of the AG dogs in the group is a husky named Skip.
Pets 2
Skip was made by AG, he was released as part of the sled dog set. I got him really cheap when they were discontinuing that set. He’s plush, non-posable. He’s one of the earliest pets (if not THE earliest) in the MyAG line, and he had no name, was simply sold as Husky dog. I named him Skip after the dog in the book “The Children of Noisy Village” by Astrid Lindgren. It was always one of my favorite books when I was growing up and I remember as a kid wishing I had a dog named Skip. He is technically Samantha’s dog in our house, but since she’s away, the other girls have been taking care of him. You won’t see him in the doll house very often, he’s a bit large and he’d much rather be outdoors playing.

Rebecca wanted a dog of her own, and not long after she arrived, she adopted Scout.
Pets 3
Scout is some sort of terrier mix. He is a Boyds Bear dog, made as part of a gift set they sold. He’s plush and very posable, his legs and head all move. I’d purchased him a while ago and one day came across him while looking for something else. I thought he’d be a perfect pet for Rebecca. He loves to lounge around on the bed, sometimes gets in to mischief with the other dogs.

Then there was Coconut!
Pets 4
I’ve told this story before: I’ve loved Coconut from the very beginning, but wasn’t wild about the fact that she wasn’t plush, more of a rock, so I’d held off buying her. Last summer AG finally revamped all of the pets so that they were posable and much more life-like. On a trip to AG Columbus I saw Coconut in person and it was love at first sight! Coconut is Kit’s dog, but everyone plays with her, she’s just so darned cute!

At Christmas, Chester arrived.

Pets 5
Chester is a Pomeranian and belongs to Cassandra. He was named after the dog on the TV show “The Nanny”, also a Pomeranian. If you haven’t realized it already, Chester is really Boo, “The World’s Cutest Dog”. He was also a keychain and I very carefully cut the loop that held that part in place. I found him for sale at a store near here, but I’ve also seen him on Amazon, available like this or dressed in any number of outfits. He’s really a nice plush toy and even though he isn’t jointed, he’s actually somewhat posable.

Can’t forget Finn!
Pets 7
Finn is made by AG and is actually Rembrandt from the Saige collection. There is a really funny story about me getting him. I’d missed out on him when he was originally sold and I wasn’t about to pay what they wanted for him on Ebay (at the time was around $40) so I’d resigned myself to not having him. I love herding dogs and I would have loved to have gotten him for my crew. Cyber Monday of 2014 arrived and lo and behold, there he was. Only one problem–you couldn’t buy him due to some sort of glitch in the computer system at AG. I even called the company and the girl there couldn’t even order him for me that way. Several hours later, I decided to go in and see what was left in the sale and just for the heck of it, I decided to click “Add to Bag”-and it worked! I was so excited I posted about it on another blog, only to discover that Nonna (bless her soul!) had also been trying to buy it for me as well, she knew how much I’d wanted him. Wouldn’t that have been funny if I’d ended up with two of them! When he arrived I decided he would be Abby and Zara’s dog, but I didn’t like the name Rembrandt, so with the help of my friend Catherine, he became Finn. I love his face, he looks so serious and soulful, doesn’t he?

Last but not least: Lulu.

Pets 8
I’ve had Lulu even longer than I have had Skip. Lulu is jointed and is made by North American Bear as the companion to their bear, Muffy Vanderbear. I had her stored away and a couple of months ago, I remembered her cute accessories. I went digging around and pulled her out, she is now Marie-Grace’s dog. She’s also a West Highland terrier, a bit smaller than Coconut. The accessories included a dog bowl, a bed, a brush and a really lame leash.

I think with all the pets available that fit the AG dolls, AG needs to come out with a doll sized Dyson Animal vacuum!

Stay tuned though, we aren’t done. We had a little pet “surprise” recently. 🙂

The Valentine’s Day party

Back when the girls had the New Year’s Eve party, they talked about how much fun it would be to have a Valentine’s Day party. They were even happier when they realized that Valentine’s Day fell on a Saturday this year, so they would have all kinds of time to prepare and could pull out all of the stops. And that they did!

Vday 1

Kit was in charge of making tea:

While Cassandra and Marie-Grace got all the snacks and goodies ready:

Rebecca, Abby and Zara had done all the sewing and decorating.  Abby and Zara ran home to change, but when Abby walked in to the kitchen, she started to laugh.

Vday 5“Check it out, I match the tablecloth!!!”

“We match the runner on the sideboard too” giggled Rebecca and Kit.

Vday 6 Vday 7

The girls had decided since they didn’t get to exchange names at Christmas, it would be fun to do it for Valentine’s Day.  They decided it would be “Secret Cupid” and no one could know who had each other’s names.  The only rule was that Abby and Zara couldn’t get each other’s names since they were sisters.  To keep it even more secret each girl got a plain bag that they brought the gift to mom in, and they whispered in mom’s ear whose name they had so that she could write the name on it.  That way, no one could cheat by figuring out whose handwriting it was.  Pretty clever huh?!

“Whose going to go first?” asked Rebecca?  No one answered right away, but suddenly Abby said she would go first.  “My name starts with the letter A, so it makes sense, doesn’t it?” she laughed.

Abby sat in the chair and mom set the bag beside her.  She said she had absolutely no idea who might have her name.  She opened the bag, and in it were a pair of bunny slippers and a big box of Valentine’s day chocolate. “YUMMY!” Abby exclaimed!  “Plus with this awful cold weather we are having, I can sure use these slippers.”

“So who do you think had your name Abby?” asked Cassandra. “Was it you?” Abby inquired. “Nope, not me!” “Hmmmm, was it Rebecca?” Abby questioned. “No, wasn’t me either.” “I haven’t a clue, I give up!” “It was ME!” shouted Marie-Grace. “Oh, duh, I should have known” Abby said, “I remember you and I looking at those slippers at the mall.”
Next up was Cassandra:

She quickly ripped in to her bag. “OH cool! A Strawberry Shortcake doll and this neat bag with a peace sign on it” she said. “I bet I know exactly who got me this…Zara!!!” “How did you know?” Zara questioned. “Because you and I were talking about this kind of stuff over Christmas break. I LOVE IT!”

“Well, since we are going alphabetically, Kit, you are next” said Cassandra. “No, skip me, I want to go last. You know, saving the best for last” Kit giggled. “Okay” said Cassandra, “that means Marie-Grace is next.”

Marie-Grace sat in the chair and mom handed her the bag. She shook it a bit and wondered what it might be. Then she finally just dug in!
Vday 12   Vday 13
In her bag was an adorable stuffed gorilla, and a cool book about Feng Shui. “Who do you think had your name?” asked Kit. “I’m not sure, hmmmm…Abby?” “Nope” said Abby. “Uh, Cassandra???” “Yep, it was me, I hope you like it!” responded Cassandra. “I don’t like it…I LOVE IT!”

Next up was Rebecca. She could hardly contain herself, she was so excited, and even more so once she opened it up. In her bag was this funny dinosaur figure that when you wound him up, he walked, and a really nice bag with a skating design embroidered on it.
Vday 10   Vday 11

“Oh my gosh, it’s perfect!” Rebecca gushed.  “And I bet I know exactly who it is from…Abby!”  “Yup, when I saw that bag, I knew you just had to have it!” said Abby.  “Thank you so much, it will get so much use going back and forth to the rink for lessons and practice.”

“Your turn Zara!” said Rebecca.

Vday 16 Vday 17

When she opened the bag, Zara found an adorable Hello Kitty doll and a Hello Kitty book.  “Well, the only two people left are Rebecca and Kit…I say it’s from Kit!”  “Wow, that was a good guess, even if there are only two of us” said Kit.  “I hope you like it!”  “It’s great!” said Zara.  “I’ve been wanting some Hello Kitty stuff, I just got a cool suitcase with her on it, these will go great with that.”

Last, but not least was Kit.  “Well, since everyone else has gone already, I know that my gift is from Rebecca.  I don’t know if I should be excited or scared” she joked.  “Just open it!” said Rebecca.

Vday 18 Vday 19

“Oh wow!!!” exclaimed Kit.  “A cool book, and a replica of the house from Downton Abbey!”  “You have to take it out of the box for everyone to see” said Rebecca.

Vday 20

“NO WAY! It lights up AND plays the Downton Abbey Theme!!!”

All of the girls agreed that this had been a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day and now that all the presents had been opened, exchanged thank you’s and hugs.  There was a ton of food to nibble on, but before they ate, they wanted a group photo taken.  They insisted that Coconut and Finn be in the picture too since they were all dressed up.

Vday 21

Vday 22

“I wonder when we can get out of these stupid outfits?” Finn whispered to Coconut.  “I bet if we stole a couple of cookies, we’d be banished in a hurry” replied Coconut.  “DEAL!”

Vday 23

All of us at Say Hello To My Little Friends hope you had a great Valentine’s Day-and didn’t steal any cookies!

Make your own Valentine’s Day set for Coconut :)

One Broke Girl is on hiatus for this week for 2 reasons: 1) I didn’t get the project for this week finished (my bad!) and 2) I have another thing that I really really really wanted to share, and it’s kind of “time sensitive”.

At the beginning of the year, American Girl released two new items with a Valentine’s Day theme, one was a baseball style t-shirt that is beyond cute. At $12 I thought it was a little overpriced, but it’s done in such a way that you could wear it on a doll year round. The other thing they came out with was the My Furry Valentine set for Coconut. I am in love with Coconut and when I saw some early photos, I really thought it would be a cute set to have. This is what it looks like (just in case you’ve been living under a rock.)  Totes adorbs, isn’t it?!

When the new items were officially released, I looked it up immediately. And then I saw the price: $18! Are you serious?!?! There is nothing to this! As cute as I thought it was, I just couldn’t bring myself to spend that much money on this, it just wasn’t worth it AT ALL. You know me though, the brain started working overtime with ideas on how I could make my own.  Every time I went somewhere that had Valentine’s stuff or to a craft store, I kept my eyes open for things I could use.  Eventually it all came together, and I’m happy to report that my version cost all of $3.33 to make, plus I have stuff left over to use for other projects.  YES!

First thing I found was this butterfly hair clip at Michael’s for $1.50. When I came across this, it really got the ball rolling on this project. I have also seen pre-made wings in the doll supply sections of craft stores, or you could use tulle netting. There are so many ways you could make wings, it’s up to you.
valentine 1

Then I picked up a package of foam sticky hearts at Dollar Tree, well worth the $1 since I got a ton of them and I can use those for other projects.
Valentine 2

You will need something for the magnet in your pet’s mouth to grab. I did some thinking and then remembered that I had a package of these in my craft supplies.  I tested it before I used it to make sure the magnet in Coconut’s mouth would grab it, worked like a charm.
Valentine 4

Last thing I needed were some red pipe cleaners, these cost me 83 cents, I think there are 24 in a pack. Be sure to get the ones that are 12 inches long, you will need them to be that long. I also thought it might be cute to use the metallic look ones for a different look, unfortunately they didn’t have any of those at my craft store.
Valentine 3

A red marker. I’m partial to Sharpie, but you could use a lot of different things. I think puffy paint would be fun too, but I’m not patient enough to wait for it to dry!
Valentine 5

Oh, and don’t forget these!
Valentine 6

Yup, no special tools required for this project! That’s what I love about this project, it’s so easy and doesn’t require a ton of know how or special gadgets. (If you had seen all the tools I drug out just to make my Christmas cards, you would understand why this is such a big deal for me 😉 )

One other thing you will need is a small rubber band or a hair elastic. I used one of the clear ones that comes in those bags you pick up at Sally Beauty Supply, most anyone with a thing for doing doll hair is going to have one of those floating around.

First:  the heart for Coconut to hold.  I took two of the largest size hearts in pink, removed the adhesive from both and stuck them together, sticky side to sticky side.  It was a little bit tricky to line it up, but it worked great.  Then I wrote what I wanted it to say using the Sharpie marker on one side, and then stuck the self adhesive pin to the reverse side.

Valentine 7 Valentine 8

You can see in these photos that I didn’t get the alignment perfect when I stuck these together.  I may trim the front side of this with a pair of scissors.  Or, I may just try making another set, since I have a whole bag of these!  I also noticed that one of them was a little squished, so I deliberately used that one for the back so I could save the nice ones for other things.  Think ahead!

Next–the wings.  First thing I did was trim the antennae off the butterfly since these are supposed to be cupid wings.  One nice thing about these being a hair clip is they already had an alligator style clip attached.  I simply found the middle point of a pipe cleaner and clipped it on. If there is no clip, there is plenty of extra pipe cleaner for this part if you need to wrap it around and give it a good twist.

Valentine 9 Valentine 10

What I thought was really interesting about this butterfly was how it was reinforced-feather!  There’s another idea of something you could make wings out of!

Last but not least, the headpiece.  First thing I did was fold the end of a pipe cleaner about 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch so you have something to hook the hair tie to:

Valentine 11

At this point I held the pipe cleaner up to Coconut’s head so I could figure out where the antennae needed to start:

Valentine 12

Then I bent it upwards, it looked like this afterwards:

Valentine 13

Then I bent it again at about an inch or just a tiny bit more:

Valentine 14

I straightened it out and then using my fingers, gave the pipe cleaner a twist to anchor the antennae!

Valentine 15

I held it up to Coconut again to determine where the second one needed to go and basically did the same thing I did before:

Valentine 16 Valentine 17

At this point you need to get out 4 of the small hearts and attach them sticky side to sticky side on the antennae. These ones hold very well, this particular set has been on several days and hasn’t budged.   Then you will use the pony tail holder over the ends you bent upwards to keep it secure on your pets head.  Bend the ends further upwards to secure the pony tail holder.

Valentine 18 Valentine 19

Okay, are you ready for some serious cuteness????  Really????  REALLY????

Valentine 20

Valentine 21

I’ve always thought that Coconut was the cutest dog EVER, and this just makes her even cuter!  Plus, think about all the other possibilities with these instructions for different holidays using different colors, they make those foam stickers in just about every shape possible.  Have fun, and if you make some for yourself, be sure to share a link to the photos in the comments. ENJOY!!!!!!
