Review of Melody’s Electric Piano

A few posts ago I mentioned that I wanted to get Melody’s Electric Piano as my birthday present.  Originally I was going to wait until Evil Twin and I went to the new pop-up store in Pittsburgh.  My plans all changed though when we not only postponed our trip, but I also discovered that it doesn’t seem to be available in any of the pop-up stores!  I decided to just go ahead and order it so I was sure it was here by my birthday and after a bit of fuss and hassle, I finally managed to get the order placed.  It arrived this past weekend and I just had to show it to everyone!  Happy Happy Birthday to Me indeed!!

The first thing I got a chuckle out of was on the box where it said “adult assembly required”.  They apparently don’t know the same children I do, just about any of the kids I know could have put this together in seconds.  I did.  You basically just pop the legs into place.  Unscrew the battery compartment, insert batteries, put the cover back on and you’re ready to go!

I was very disappointed when I got everything out of the box and discovered that the sheet music was just floating around in the box, all by itself.  Mine got a little bent up because of that, fortunately not mangled.  I thought for sure it would come in some sort of envelope, or in a plastic bag with the instructions, but nope, just floating around in the box.  Weird.

Here it is assembled:

A shot of the underside so you can see where the legs pop in:

And a view of the on/off switch (which is also the volume control) and the battery compartment.

One thing I was very pleased to see is that the speakers on it are in the right place!  This is where they would be on a real piano keyboard or even the more modern synthesizer type keyboard we have now.  Very cool.

Overall, I’m really thrilled with this piece.  It’s a toss up between this and the camper as to which I like the best!  I think this is a terrific accessory for the price too, $48 is not horribly out of line, especially if you compare it to some of the other items they have for sale that don’t do anything special.

Oh dear, I am in major trouble!! (Thanks AG)

Okay guys, new releases over at AG today!!! And just when I thought there would be nothing I wanted, they go and do something that is just…perfect. Let’s talk new stuff!!

First things first: Wellie Wishers are here! Much anticipation about this new line of dolls, and we finally get to see them and all of their goodies. Lots of cute stuff, I’ll be curious to see how this line does. Personally, I doubt I will get any of the dolls. If I do, it would be Emerson, wouldn’t she be cute as Cassandra’s little sister? I would love to know if the little accessories are sized down any from standard AG size, I think the Make-It-Great Play set is so cute, but will hold off until I read more or get to see it in person. Overall though, a very cute line for the age group it is aimed at.

A few new things for Bitty Baby, but not a lot. I’m not a Bitty Baby collector, but I think what they have this time is very cute. Has anyone else noticed that Bitty Baby gets a lot of party clothes???

On to AG! I don’t know where to start!!! Some really cute new accessories, I will more than likely buy the ombre glasses. The jewelry is just okay, not all that wild about that. Clothing releases this time are just average, but there is a HUGE (and I mean HUGE!) development here.  Almost everything is sold as separates!!!!!!!!!!!!  YESSSSS!!!!!!!  I’ve been saying for a while that this would be a nice thing so you can make up outfits you like instead of buying things because you like one item out of a set.  This is a fantastic idea, I am so glad they decided to do this.  I am trying to figure out this sudden emphasis on cats though?? Poor Coconut, gone and quickly forgotten. 😦

I was surprised to see a re-release of the trundle day bed this time around.  It looks pretty much like the one they used to sell, just a change in the design on the center, the knobs on the trundle and the color of the bedding.   Hopefully it is as well made as the previous one, it is one of my favorite pieces.

Camping is featured as the activity this time, and this is where it gets super dangerous…for me anyways.  All sorts of cuteness and fun stuff.  And this:

AG Camper

When I saw this, I let out a little squeal. I LOVE this. I’m not usually a big fan of the larger/pricier items, but this is where I might have to make an exception. I always thought Lanie’s camper was cute, and the OG version of it as well, but I was hesitant because of storage issues. With this, it’s just like a real one and it folds up!! All of the camping stuff is cute, but this really struck a chord with me, probably because my brother and several other people I know had one of these types of campers at some point in time. I was saving my money for some of the stuff for Melody, but that doesn’t come out until August (and I suspect late August since that seems to be when they release BeForever stuff), so that money may just go somewhere else. I suppose I could tell my husband I want Melody’s card table and chairs for my birthday? I’m also happy to see them bring back the domed tent style, I always liked that one better than the others.  I doubt I will buy it since I have that pattern to make a tent (which BTW I haven’t done yet in case you wondered) and I have a My Life As version too.  Still like it though.  I do have lots of girls… 😉

Overall, I think this is a great release.  The last few have just been “meh” for me, but this one made up for that.  I have my fingers crossed that this release is a sign of things to come.  I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Review of Our Generation Garden Party

Our Generation seems to be working overtime lately to come out with some new sets.  A lot of them are cute, but only one really appealed to me.  On Monday I finally felt good enough to try and go to Target, and I was excited to find the set I wanted: Garden Party!  Even better that it was on sale, so instead of paying $17.99, I only paid $13.59, yay!  I have to admit that I went back and forth on if I was going to get this, but once I saw it in person and that it was on sale, I decided to go for it.

Here it is in the package:

Garden party 1

There are lots of cute pieces in this set, and not a ton of repeats from other sets. This group shows the items I was unsure about what to do with when I initially looked at it, but after thinking on it and then seeing it in person, I think they have lots of possibilities.
Garden party 2
The little pinwheel is very cute and works like a charm!  The banner is well made, the boxes are cute, but a bit small, not sure what I could put in them (if anything).  All in all though, well done.

The covered pedestal and cookies are cute, and great for anyone who has a doll bakery or similar venture.

Garden party 3 Garden party 4

The lid is a bit tall for all the more cookies you get, I guess we will have to order pizza soon so I can get another stand for inside it.  (a great use for those things they put in pizza boxes to keep the top of the box from sticking to the pizza)  The cookies are the same as the ones that come with the tea set, just painted a different color.  I like that because now I have a nice assortment of them.

The set includes a very pretty little tray, two tarts, and two fancy sandwiches.

Garden party 5 Garden party 6

The tarts are also the same as the ones that come with the tea set.  I like the way the sandwiches are done in this set because they actually used layers of plastic to create the sandwich instead of painting it on.

Now for the piece that has a lot of people annoyed:

Garden party 7 Garden party 8

Why, oh why did they feel the need to print something on this, and not make it removable???????  This has to be one of the DUMBEST things I’ve ever seen!  It is a shame because otherwise, it’s a well done piece.  I’m planning on taking a piece of black scrapbook paper and writing on it with a white drawing pencil with what I WANT!  (insert head scratch here)

And now for the items that I wanted most out of this set…(drumroll)

Garden party 9 Garden party 10

I fell in love with the lemonade pitcher right off the bat, just wasn’t sure I wanted to spend $17.99 just to get it.  After some thought I decided that I could use most of the items in the set though.  I did get a chuckle out of the floating straws as well as the piece of pink lemon (or is that grapefruit?!) floating in the yellow lemonade.  Hmmmmm…

Even with it’s flaws, I think this is a cute set with lots of play/photo shoot possibilities.  I give it a B+.  I do have to say though that I think OG needs to spend a bit more time thinking about some of the details on these sets instead of just cranking them out willy nilly to keep up with American Girl.  They have a good product line, and over the past year I noticed a lot of improvement in quality, but this set is not 100% up to snuff in that department.  Some of the other new sets also have some items that make me think they hurried too much.  I realize there is a ton of competition in this category, but if you start making junk, you’ll find yourself in trouble.  I’m hoping these are the exception and not the rule in the coming releases.

I’m hoping to get back on track as far as posting, I’m starting to finally feel much better and getting caught up on things that were behind.  I have my fingers crossed to be busy over the next few weeks with sewing projects, and doing some story posts.  March was definitely a tough month, and I’m glad it’s over with!
