Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Instagram?

Hello everybody!!  I thought I’d take a quick minute to update everyone on what is new and exciting here.  To be honest, not a whole lot.  But things are moving along.  Or at least most things are.

The book is on a temporary hold, but I’m planning on getting back to it soon.  First off, I got that horrible flu that was making the go-rounds.  Talk about a downer!  I’m all better from that.  It’s hard to write though when all you can do is cough.  And of course everything else was behind, so there is the inevitable catch up.  I did get back to writing and finally past a part where I was a bit stuck, always a good thing.  Then the near unthinkable happened–my laptop had a nervous breakdown.  And dummy me hadn’t saved what I’d written to an external drive.  (Insert scream here).  The good news is I was able to get the laptop back up and running and able to get my written chapters recovered.  However, I’ve also had to purchase a new laptop, and I haven’t had the time to get everything transferred and up and running there.  That’s on my “to do list” in the very near future and hopefully I can get back to it.  I’ve been rethinking some of what I want to do as well, so maybe the delays have been a good thing.

My guitar lessons have had an unexpected twist and at the moment, I am currently lesson-less.  I had a bit of a falling out with my guitar teacher for a number of reasons.  It’s all good though as I didn’t feel I was getting the kind of training I was expecting and I have since signed up with a new teacher starting at the beginning of April.  In the meantime I am continuing to practice and learn new songs on my own.  I’m still enjoying it though and I’m really looking forward to seeing what my new teacher has to offer.

Otherwise, it’s still pretty much the same old stuff here.  I’ve been working on doll posts as I have the time and posting them in advance so I have a bit of a backlog, which is nice!  I’m actually thinking about just keeping things this way for the foreseeable future as it’s been very convenient to devote a block of time to the blog all at once, then not have to think about it again for an extended period.  I’m still playing around with it, always a learning adventure!

Something I have noticed over the past few months, and not just with my blog, is a lot of people are posting less, several have quit and a few are “on a break” (I always think of Friends when I say or type that!).  I’ve also noticed a significant reduction in the number of hits I have on my own blog.  I think there are a number of factors that are causing this, but I am fairly certain that the number one reason is Instagram.  It’s a fun platform to use and if you aren’t into writing stories but do enjoy the doll photography, I think it’s a good option.  I don’t foresee myself ever switching to just that because I enjoy the writing aspect too much, but I do think it’s been a contributor in the reduced number of blog posts and doll blogs out there.  How many of you use Instagram, either as a “follower” or as a way of getting your doll photos out there for others to see?

Last, but certainly not least is the news of toy retailer Toys R Us and their plans to close their stores.  I thought they might be able to pull through, but apparently not.  When news hit of this, the stocks of several major toy companies, Mattel included, dropped significantly.  I can’t help but wonder how this is going to affect the American Girl line at some point.

I hope everyone is doing well!  I come in here and regularly read the comments and try to reply in a timely manner.  I’ve been contemplating trying a couple of new things here, but they are still in the “think” stage at the moment, so I’m not sure which ones will actually be used.  Stay tuned–and keep in touch!!

    • Thanks Tess!! I know there are still a few that don’t have IG, and while I use it, it’s just not quite the same.

  1. Guilty. I decided that I needed to work on the real house so I can get my doll room back and then blog about putting it back together and moving it. I don’t think I can get my url back so this will give me a revamped focus that should contain my mental anguish over losing my original blog.

Same source of anguish has led me away from my music but a guy (who turned out to be a guy not worth my time very quickly) asked for a copy of my recordings so I found what I had and listened to them. I forgot how much I liked them. I’m not ready to do it all over but I think I’ll try to practice again. Good on you for lessons…I never did that.

The good rumor I heard with TRU is that an independent toy manufacturer is trying to buy out around 200 US stores from the bankruptcy and keep them open as TRU. He says he owes it to consumers to try to save the toy store. Hopefully, the creditors and bankruptcy courts will allow this action without requiring him to carry some of that debt over too. If they do, he can succeed. That didn’t stop me from running to TRU for an Australian Kelsey though, just in case.

    Glad you’re feeling better!

    • “who turned out to be a guy not worth my time very quickly”–gee, did you meet my guitar teacher??? LOL I probably could have taught myself using what I already know and all the great stuff on the internet, but I was afraid of maybe learning some bad habits (that would be hard to unlearn). Plus, having a lesson each week holds me accountable to someone else, so it keeps me practicing!

I feel for you on the whole blog thing, but agree that just starting over probably is the easiest course of action.

Interesting about TRU, I’ll have to keep an eye out for this!

  2. It was nice to hear from you! The blogger community does seem to be very quiet, but it was about time for another season of change. it seems every so often new people join and old favourites decide they’ve had enough. It’s all very sad when it happens. I use Instagram, I started just so I could keep up with certain people, and then realised how fun it was to post there. You’re right, it can be a little more convenient to post there because it’s just a picture and a thought. I have no plans of leaving my blog though, it just takes so much time to write out a post and make sure the pictures get inserted correctly, it’s a lot of mental work. I’m sorry about your guitar lessons, I hope the new teacher really helps you! Finding music teachers can certainly be an adventure to find the right one.
    Happy Spring!

    • Agree on the changing of bloggers, just like everything, people lose interest or have other things going on. I’m hoping to see some new blogs in the coming months. IG can be fun, I use it mostly to follow people who don’t have blogs, but do some really creative stuff, as well as follow friends like you!

I have to admit that I am VERY spoiled when it comes to music teachers, I had two of the best when I was young. Perhaps I have a very high benchmark when it comes to that, but I also know when someone isn’t living up to expectations. From what I’ve heard, the new teacher is very good, I’ll soon find out!

  3. You know, Joan Jett left a guitar teacher because he refused to teach her electric guitar (like she needed more lessons). If your needs weren’t being met then i’s time to change (I can’t say that without thinking of Peter Brady).

Like Tess said, I’m here for you. 🙂

Sorry to hear about the laptop issue. That is quite annoying! Make sure you get it fixed up how you like. My current one was a gift and does not have office on it, so no word, excel, etc. ARGH.

I have no plans on exiting the blogisphere. I like the whole process of planning a post photos and story. Yes, many times I fly by he seat of my pants, but even that is fun to me.

Speaking of TRU – did you hear KB Toys is coming back?

    • Interesting about Joan Jett, I did not know that! I’m just glad that I didn’t waste anymore time and money and decided to make a change. I think it’s going to be a much better situation for many reasons.

I couldn’t live without Office, that’s one of the first things I need to install. That and several photo editing programs! I just need to sit down and do it.

Interesting abut KB Toys, I always liked them!

  4. Instagram guilty, but still have my favourite blogs on my reading list. Not sure what will happen to TRU in Australia, they moved from my convenient location last year while the shopping centre is undergoing renovations so i have already had to get used to them not being around, and well Kmart is cheaper, but if they go altogether I wonder if the super chain that owns kmart Australia will try their bigbox toystore again, when TRU were first around (I noticed them late 90s) we had World 4 Kids, I remember the Barbie aisle.

    • That will be interesting to see how it goes. Kmart here is not doing great, they have closed some stores and are closing more, we are losing the one close to us. It makes me sad, now I’ll have to drive across town to go to Walmart. Retail is definitely a rapidly changing landscape these days!

  5. I am guilty as charged of not posting as much recently!! I have zero intentions of leaving blogging though. I really enjoy it. I don’t use Instagram, but I have joined some crafty doll groups on Facebook, so I spend a lot of time there. The main reason that I haven’t been posting anything as much recently though is due to finishing up my book. Can you believe that I am currently editing the last of 600 pages, and that I have been stuck on this one page for a week?? I have also been working out the front cover issues as well as all other formatting stuff. As soon as it goes to press, which is this next month, I am going to get back to everything doll crafty and blogworthy.

I am so excited and happy that you are book writing!! And guitar lessons! Wow! I used to play guitar, but I wasn’t any good at it.

Also, it’s nice to hear that you aren’t leaving blogging anytime soon either. I love your blog, even if I haven’t been able to participate as much lately. I will be back in action very soon though. My daughter is starting to grow out of dolls, but I never will. I am looking forward to the rest of what 2018 has to offer. 🙂

      • Absolutely! I always want to do everything, but priorities have to come first and there is just so little time! Sigh, oh well. I have decided that I will post more on my blog Facebook group though, just because a lot of what’s going on behind the scenes for us isn’t enough to make an entire blog post about. Instead, it’s mainly tiny snippets here and there. That way I don’t feel so inactive in the doll world if I can’t find the time to put together an entire post. At least I can check in and post something quick every once in a while. 🙂

      • Balancing things is terrible! I’m always out of balance and get annoyed when asked to do just one more thing. can I please finish my list first? LOL

Looking forward to seeing new post from you Bennettv. Which Facebook groups are you in? I’m in two that I just follow and am in awe of those with the true DIY crafty skills.
