Looking back on 2017

Hello everybody!  Is everyone excited about all of the new stuff coming out in the next few days?  I did get to watch the video for the big reveal of Luciana Vega, very cool.  I’m anxious to see all of the new items that will be coming out along with her.  And of course, there’s a ton of excitement about the American Boy dolls.  Not sure that I will be picking up anyone at this point, I really do think I’m at the breaking point.  I even have someone to show you guys that I haven’t just yet…but that will be something to look forward to in 2018!!  Haha!!

2017 was a very interesting year.  American Girl had some very interesting new releases, and their competitors really seemed to up their games as well.  Some very interesting items to be purchased from a variety of companies.  It’s been fun seeing all of the fun doll things that have come out over the past year, and I’m hopeful that 2018 is just as exciting.

Of course, there were controversies.  It started with Gabriela as GOTY and how her stuff all seemed to be a last minute effort.  And how could we forget the whole Perma-panty fiasco?!?!?!  I think probably the most valuable lesson learned from all of that is we as a community could make our voices heard–and did we ever!  It worked too, and hopefully Perma-panties will be forever relegated to the “what the heck were we thinking” vault at AG.  You have to admit though, it did spark some interesting discussion.

I’m still a bit concerned over the whole Toys R Us bankruptcy mess.  I’ve been reading about it, not just what has been happening in the US, but also what the chain is doing in the UK, and I’m not quite sure how this is going to turn out.  Fingers crossed that our favorite 18 inch companies will come through it okay and it will be business as usual.

I always look forward to the New Year as a time of hope, change, and positivity.  This year I’m especially focused on that, as I’m working on several interesting projects!  And I think I’m ready to share them with you.

First off–I’m writing a book.  I’ve been knocking this idea around for some time now, and after some discussions with a new found friend, I finally decided to take the leap.  I’ve never taken on a project quite this daunting before, but I am very excited at the direction it’s headed.  Getting started is the hardest part of a project like this, and once I got past that inital “first page”, it went way better than I thought.  With the holiday season I haven’t worked on it quite as much as I would have liked, but now I’m hoping to organize my time better so that I can work on it a bit each day.

I’ve also really embraced my guitar lessons.  So much so, that I’m practicing anywhere from a half hour to an hour a day, sometimes more if I can.  Six weeks into my lessons, I wasn’t so sure, but I have a fantastic teacher who was very encouraging, and understood my frustrations at that point.  I’m so grateful to have met him, he not only is a great teacher, but a fun person who continues to push me and keep me accountable.  If I come out of this as a guitarist who is 1/3 as good as he is, I will be pleased.  However, all this practice does come at a price, and it’s also part of the reason why I’m not blogging as much.

I’ve also started to get back into my photography a bit, beyond what I do on the doll blog.  I’m looking at a totally new direction with that, something far different than what I’ve done in the past.  With social media ever evolving, new ways to incorporate what I do continue to pop up.  Kind of like Forrest Gump and that box of chocolates…”you never know what you’re gonna get!”

Here’s to 2018!!  And now we can all just move past that whole perma-panty thing…hopefully.

  1. Happy New Year! I am working on a post not unlike yours right now! Is it snowing on your blog template? Cool!
I think new endeavors are terrific and it is always great to hear what you are up to — doll related or not!
    To 2018!

    • Yes, you are seeing snow!! It should quit soon. It was something I set up years ago and it just automatically “turns” itself on and off. Not sure I’d be able to figure out how to turn it off now!

Thanks!!! I think 2018 is going to be a very interesting year from a lot of different directions. I just need to get organized.

  2. Happy New Year! My daughter, son-in-law and baby are moving in with me until they find a home. I had planned on starting my own doll blog before the end of this year, but that is now on the back burner. . Hopefully in the future. I’m excited for you in your new adventures! Are you going to have time to finish your hotel and post it?

    • Oh wow, that’s exciting!!! Yes, I am planning on finishing the hotel room, right now it’s on hold due to the fact that we’ve had such horribly cold temperatures and where my sewing machine is at doesn’t get warm enough. But it will be finished!

  3. Congrats on starting to write your book! That’s awesome!! Guitar sounds like fun, too! 😀 I really wonder what will happen next year with AG. Luciana’s collection definitely looks promising! I love the attention to detail on her large playset.

    • Thanks! Agree about Luciana’s collection, especially that large playset. I will be very curious to see how it sells, I could see teachers who specialize in STEM curriculum’s wanting something like this for their classroom set ups.

  4. Wow, that sounds like a lot of nice things are lining up for you..yay! Now that we’ve seen Luciana’s collection, I couldn’t be more in love. Not necessarily for myself and my collection, but for my 8 year old daughter. She is very into STEM, math and coding and this theme is so fun! We received the magazine in the mail and poured over her photos. This is the first time she’s REALLY shown interest in getting an American Girl doll, so we will probably add her to our collection in the future! I for one, love the blue NASA jumpsuit, lol.
Congrats on deciding to write a book! What an amazing venture. I hope your ideas flow!
Also congrats on sticking with your guitar. I played a bit in college and dabble now with the ukulele, but wished I never stopped the guitar as it’s tough to go back. I love music and wish I had time to learn so many more instruments! I recently started the Yousician app to teach myself piano. Fun!
I’ve enjoyed your posts this year and looking forward to 2018 as well. 🙂

    • I think Luciana is a very cool character, and I’m anxious to see how well she does. I agree with the NASA jumpsuit, too cute!!

The book is such a crazy situation, and it’s somewhat autobiographical. I’ve been working on several different ideas and trying to decide a direction before I get too far. Outlines and notes galore!

The guitar is something I always regretted not doing when I was younger. Unfortunately at the time, I had limited resources and no way to get to a lesson, one advantage of being an adult. I can see though why not many adults take it up because it is time consuming. I bought a new piano keyboard too, finding out just how rusty I am at that!
