A Big Ebay Find!

In my last post I hinted at a bit of a surprise coming up.  I’ve come to the conclusion that I spend way too much time on Ebay though.

All of you know Abby:

Say hello Abby!

She’s a renamed Saige doll that I bought 2 years ago.  When I bought her, I knew her hair was a bit of a mess and I worked on getting it straightened out, but it just hasn’t gone very well.  It was in worse shape than I realized, ugh.  I fully intended on sending her in to the doll hospital to get a new head, but then pantygate happened and not only have I vowed not to purchase anything from AG until they get their heads on straight again, I’d also heard some not so good rumblings about recent hospital experiences.  I was in a bit of a pickle.

After a bit of debate, I decided my best course of action was to buy a new doll.  Not a fun task.  And I know it sounds kind of silly, but let me explain.  Saige is the only GOTY that I ever really wanted.  I have others, but there was always something about that darned doll.  Unfortunately she came out when the finances in our household weren’t exactly flush and I couldn’t justify spending that money on a doll.  So naturally when I got into all of this, she was the first GOTY on my list.  The rest were ones I liked, and just happened to work out, but if I could have only had one, it would have been Saige.  I had decided to look at a NRFB (Never Removed From Box).  I found a couple from reliable sellers that weren’t an arm and a leg, but they were still pricey.  I knew I didn’t want to wait too long to make up my mind though as I have a suspicion once the permapanty dolls hit the market full force, prices of non-permapanty dolls on Ebay are going to jump a bit.  So I was watching in earnest.

Then it happened.  I popped on Ebay one day and decided to check out the new Saige listings.  And there she was, a beautiful Saige doll, from someone’s collection.  The woman was an adult collector that was having to reduce the size of her collection and was selling off various dolls and accessories from several different lines.  When I clicked on the auction, I couldn’t believe my luck.  Not only was she in gorgeous, like new condition, but she also came with her parade outfit, which I had been eyeing up for ages!  I quickly hit the “buy it now” button and in a few days she was here!

Isn’t she lovely?!?!?! When I got her out of the box, I was so excited, I finally had my perfect Saige!

Let me just tell you, Abby is not upset in the least.  In fact, they are already friends!

Here is a shot of the top of their heads so you can see the difference.  Abby’s hair feels so dry and it’s breaking off so she has these sharp pieces sticking up.  I’ve tried conditioning it, and since I can’t dip her head completely, that is out.

So, what now??

Well, after a bit of debate, Abby is still going to be Abby.  BUT she is going to get a new wig.   I haven’t settled on what she is going to get 100% just yet, but I’ve got a couple of things in mind.  I thought about selling her, and making the new Saige into Abby 2.0, but when I looked on Ebay and saw all the more a Saige in her condition would sell for, I decided I would just keep her and customize her.

Saige isn’t going to remain Saige either.  I never liked her name.  Since she arrived, she’s been hanging out in my living room.  One day I just happened to look at her and her lovely hair and realized she looked an awful lot like a character on my favorite British Soap, Coronation Street.  So I’ve decided her name is going to be Jenny Bradley.  (If you watch the show, I can assure you she won’t be a trouble maker like her namesake!)  I’m still working on Jenny’s backstory but she has another surprise in store for our readers!

The other awesome part of the auction was this:

I’ve always liked this set and missed out on it as well. To get it in this auction and still not pay even close to what a NRFB doll was the icing on the cake! I love these boots too, I think they are gorgeous!

Now you’ve seen the surprise. Stay tuned for the next installments of what happens to Jenny and Abby!

Ebay Finds!

I’m always perusing Ebay in search of something that I don’t have for my collection or a good deal.  One thing I love finding is a discontinued set or part of a set at a bargain price.  I was THRILLED to bits over the Apres Ski sweater and pants I picked up last year, awesome find.  Not long after that, I came across something else I’d had my eye on, and just the pieces I wanted:  the Sport Riding Outfit.  The set originally came with shirt, pants, boots and riding hat.  This was just the shirt and pants, and since I already had the other two pieces and storage is at a premium here, I was okay with that.

The price was more than reasonable and free shipping.  The only issue was, when they arrived, they were dirtier than what they appeared to be in the photos.  Ugh.  I hate washing doll clothes because you never know what might happen, but I figured what did I have to loose.  I tossed the shirt in with a load of medium colors I had, and then hung it to dry.  It came out fine.  The pants were a bigger problem though because the belt was attached.  Hmmmm…  Finally I decided to throw caution to the wind and put them in with a load of whites.  The belt unfortunately didn’t survive, but it wasn’t in all that great of shape to begin with, so I carefully cut it off in the back.  I did save the buckle from it, I may perhaps make a new belt with it, although I’ll be honest, I think they are an unnecessary part of this outfit as the shirt doesn’t tuck in easily to begin with!  Here’s Abby modeling it for us:

I think this outfit is very cute, but I could never understand why it didn’t come with a polo mallet?! How is she supposed to play polo while on her horse without it? I love the details on the pants for this set, I can’t imagine sewing these tiny belt loops.

Normally I would pair this with a pair of black boots I already have, but I wanted to show you these cool Wellington boots I picked up on Ebay as well!

I’ve been wanting a pair of “Wellies” for my girls for a while and I was very excited to find these. They go on and off very easily, they just slip on. They are very flexible and lined as well which helps. Wellington boots have been popular for ages in the United Kingdom, but have really taken off in the US over the past few years. I thought these worked well with this outfit, great for mucking out the stable! I love the white “label” area on the front, patterned after Hunter brand boots. Obviously they couldn’t use the name due to copyright reasons.

Love the bow trim on the side too, I think it gives them a nice feminine touch. These boots are made by Sophia’s and I’ve seen them in other patterns and colors too. I wish I could find a pair in authentic Wellie green.

That’s it for this edition of Ebay finds. I have several more things I’ve picked up that I can’t wait to share with you, one of them is a biggie. Till then!

Review of American Girl Merry Magenta Outfit

Every year American Girl comes out with several pieces in the fall that are meant to be holiday outfits.  I tend to wait to purchase these when they go on clearance after the new year as I think they are generally overpriced.  Boy was I glad I waited this year because it was a major disappointment.  In fact, if I had paid full price for this set to begin with, I would have sent it back.

Very cute…from a distance.  The workmanship on this dress leaves a lot to be desired.  But first, the good!

merry-magenta-3 merry-magenta-2

I do like the shoes and the purse.  However, the purse tends to bulge, the vinyl they used is a bit too stiff.  Hopefully I can remedy that.  I’m going to try setting something on it to sort of squish it down.

merry-magenta-10

The headband is cute, but it had one of those gigantic tags on it.  I cut it off, but there is still some of it that shows.  I don’t get the point of these giant tags on these.  Why couldn’t they stamp it like they do some of the other items?  And would someone PLEASE redesign these headbands????  They don’t fit well and tend to pop off, especially if using them on a doll with a Josefina mold face.  The sides aren’t long enough to even hold all of the hair back.  Hey AG designers, take a look at the My Life As headbands, they know how to do it right!

So, onto the fails.  First off, the lacy overlay.  Very pretty, but it has a major design flaw.  The back side of the design is white.  So wherever it may show, it looks terrible!!!  The dress I got wasn’t as bad as some I’ve seen either, but it is really distracting.  I don’t understand why it wasn’t dyed the pretty berry color the whole way through???

Then the next thing is the ribbon that goes around the waist.  You can sort of see it from the last photo, it’s too loose.  It was even worse on the front:

merry-magenta-4

I shouldn’t be able to fit one finger in there, let alone 3!!!  What in the world???  It almost sags, it’s so loose.  This is just bad design.  I think I can fix it, but quite frankly, I shouldn’t have to.  AG charged $36 for this set at full price, it should be right the first time.  Please note too, it’s sewn on in sections, not one continuous piece, so it’s a fail not once, not twice, but three times!

The last thing–the tulle underneath the skirt.

merry-magenta-9

merry-magenta-8

I held a piece of paper behind it so you could see it better.  It looks like it was cut out with the world’s dullest scissors.  Or perhaps chewed out?  I was appalled when I saw this.  Tulle cuts very easily, there is no excuse for this.  GAH!

I rate this set overall a C-.  An A for the shoes, a B for the purse, a C for the headband and an F for the dress.  It’s a shame because the dress could be so cute, but when a company sells a doll outfit for what a human article of clothing costs, I expect a lot more.  I’m very concerned that this dress is a sign of things to come with American Girl.  I recently spent some time reading the reviews on the items that were released for Gabriela and they aren’t very good.  Apart from the many complaints about holes poked in the clothes from them being sewn into the new packaging, there were a ton of complaints of poor paint jobs, or paint coming off on several of the items.  Not good at all.  It just seems lately that American Girl is suffering from a lot of one step forward, two steps back.  How long until they completely loose their customers because of it?

In case you are wondering–this set was from the last order I placed with American Girl, and it will be the last I place until they either apologize for undermining the intelligence of the fans and/or improve their quality.  I’m not going to waste anymore money on their crap.  My husband even commented on the poor quality this time and said “If I were you, I would quit buying from them.”  Done deal.  I will spend my money on Etsy instead.
