A Surprise for Louisa

I hope everyone had a terrific Thanksgiving!  I know we did here, until last night when I went to reheat leftovers and discovered that my oven isn’t working, ugh!  Oh well, what can you do.  I guess it means I get a new oven, which is something to look forward to.  But I’m not a fan of THOSE kinds of surprises.

The kind of surprises I like are good ones.  Like a surprise visit, a surprise present.  Something fun.  Louisa got a super surprise today, and I’m going to share it with you.  She spent Thanksgiving with her dad and his family.  He dropped her off this morning on his way to hunting camp.  She was very excited to see her mom and her grandpap.  And of course Eddie.  But she wasn’t prepared for what she was going to see when she walked into her bedroom.

While she was away, her mom and grandpap had totally redone her room! Louisa is a fan of zebras, so her mom thought it would be a fun theme for her room. It didn’t hurt that she found that chest of drawers while out shopping. 😉

“This is AWESOME!!! Thank you so much! I feel so grown up now with my room all done up like this.”

“Oh look, the ugly curtains are gone from the window too, I can actually see outside!”

A couple of close ups so you can see some of the details.

“Isn’t this awesome Lily?  I can’t wait to show it to Alya!”

In case you are wondering: the walls are a fold up display board. The bed, chair, chest of drawers, shelf on the wall and most of the toys/littles in the room all came from thrift stores (a few are new). I made the bedding as well as the chair cushions. The wallpaper border as well as the window frame are all scrapbook paper. Bookshelf was in the clearance section at TJ Maxx, storage chest at the end of the bed came from Hobby Lobby. The photograph’s are out of my person collection, just resized and cropped for what I needed, put into frames from a craft store. I did remove the glass from the frames for safety’s sake.  I have about $30 in this room total.  When I’m done, it all fits in a box for storage that would easily slide under a bed.   It just goes to show that you don’t need to spend a ton of money or have a lot of space to come up with a cute doll room!  Just an idea and some work. I blame this one on the zebra jewelry box!

The most frustrating American Girl item I’ve ever bought!

Not too long ago I shared that I’d picked up Lea’s accessories at Kohl’s.  In case you don’t remember, this is what it includes:

I was really on the fence about this set. The items are cute, but I thought it was kind of pricey for what you actually got. But I really wanted that headband for Lea. So I decided to spring for it.

When I showed it earlier, one of the comments was that it was difficult to get on. I have some of the other ones, so I didn’t think it would be any worse than that. HAH! I tugged, I pulled, I did everything I could think of short of a hand stand. By the time it was over with, my hands hurt and it still wasn’t on. I was stunned because I’d never had issues with the other ones. I needed to think about it.

Then it hit me! In case you don’t already know this, the Josefina face mold is larger than the others. A lot of people have complained about the fact that most of the glasses American Girl has made for their dolls do not fit the Josefina mold very well, if at all. I decided to try my theory by putting this headband on a doll with the original classic face mold. I grabbed Zara and bam! It went on just like the others I had did. Theory proven.

Had I not already removed everything from the original packaging, I would have been tempted to return the whole darned thing. But I had another problem too. All the pulling and stretching I did while trying to put it on her caused some of the stitches to pop. (Apologies for the really bad photo!)

Then I got a great idea. I cut the so called stretchy section in half!

I then cut a piece of elastic about 1 1/2 inch long and sewed it to the fabric on both ends. It looked like this when it was finished. I used red thread so that if I needed to take it out, I would be able to see it easily.

And then the moment of truth!

Perfect fit!  I’m so glad I decided to give this a try, it solved the issue and made it super easy to get the headband on, even easier than the others I already have.  I do think this was a not-so-good oversight on the part of American Girl when making this item, but at least I was able to solve it easily.  I just wanted to be sure to share it too in case you have ones that are too tight, it’s an easy fix that works very well!

Review of Etsy Seller Beky’s Doll Clothes

At the beginning of the year I made a list of things I wanted to do in regards to my dolls and the blog.  One of these things was to try out some new Etsy sellers.  I think I’ve done a pretty good job of that, and I’ve been very excited to share some of these sellers with all of my readers.  I’ve recently discovered a new seller that I have bought from and I wanted to share it with you.  I can’t take full credit for this one, Evil Twin actually discovered her and then bought me an outfit from her.  After that, I was hooked!

Some of you may remember the dress that Alya wore recently for the Downton Abbey tea:
Evil Twin told me about ordering it, so I went in and checked it out. After she got hers, she hurried up and ordered one for me, she knows I love all things nautical. When she was finally able to get it to me, I was thrilled, the dress was gorgeous. And I had to have more from this seller. Enter Etsy seller Beky’s Doll Clothes.

Beky’s is owned by Wanda Boltz, a lovely lady who puts a tremendous amount of attention and detail into her clothing. Evil Twin has become a regular customer of hers, and after seeing the work, I can completely understand why. For a couple of weeks I had been checking out her site and all of a sudden I saw a dress and a top that I just had to have. Order placed and received within a several day time frame. It doesn’t hurt that she only lives on the opposite side of the state! 😉

What did I get? Here is Kanani modeling the top. The skirt is one I had that I got from If Dolls Could Dream. Usually Alya grabs it to go with her Paris t-shirt, but I thought it would also look nice with a dressier top. I was right!
I love this blouse, the lace is just perfect for the style and it’s so well made. And the best part…
NO VELCRO!!!!!!!! She says right on her shop page that she isn’t a fan of Velcro and she prefers buttons. YAY! (I think I just heard Xyra squeal on the other side of the state.)

The other item I bought this time (believe me, there will definitely be others!) was a dress that I absolutely loved. I’d been debating on buying Kit’s Christmas dress from American Girl, but then I saw this and that went completely out the window.
Doesn’t Kit look adorable in this??? Red is definitely her color too. I love the little details on this. It even included the bow for her hair that matched.  The sides have these neat bows:

And again we have buttons down the back:

I can’t even imagine making those tiny button holes, and they are very nicely done and easy to button and unbutton.

I can’t say enough good things about these items as well as the ones that I have seen that Evil Twin has purchased.  Be sure to go and check her Etsy store out, you won’t be sorry, she has so many nice items and at very reasonable prices.  Thanks Wanda for making such cute doll clothes!
