You mean I have to answer questions?

I was recently nominated by Journal of Two Dolls AND AGDollawesome for the Sisterhood of the World Bloggers Award–thank you Lizzy and Samantha! As part of the nomination, I have to answer some questions that they asked. Some of these I had to think about since it’s been a while since I was in school!!!

First Lizzy’s questions:
1) Why did you start your blog?
Because I had a lot of ideas for doll things that I wanted to share with other doll lovers

2) How many dolls do you have?
10 AG, 1 OG, and a bunch of other assorted companies, as well as a porcelain doll I made myself

3) Favorite ice cream flavor?
Mint chocolate chip (easiest question of them all!)

4) If you had to learn a type of dance, what would it be?
I actually started to learn tap a few years ago, but my screwed up knee and foot kind of put an end to that

5) Favorite BeForever character?
Kit, followed closely by Samantha

6) Least favorite school subject?
Gym–I had the worlds suckiest teachers until my Jr. year, if he could have been my gym teacher the whole time, I probably would have loved it.

7) Favorite school subject?
Math, which is a good thing seeing as I spent most of my working career working with numbers! (Believe me, I didn’t plan it!)

8) Piano or Guitar?
Piano–but I always wanted to learn guitar properly

9) Have you read the Chronicles of Narnia?
No, I should though. I had a thing about fantasy lit when I was younger, hated it because of a couple of friends.

10) Are you an extrovert or introvert?
Extrovert, I can talk to just about anyone!

And now Samantha’s questions!
1) What is your opinion on hard candy? And if you like it, what is your favorite kind?

Funny you should ask–I do and I’ve been really hungry for Brach’s watermelon sparkles, but I haven’t seen them in ages!

2)Do you like Christian music?

I do, but I don’t listen to it often

3)If you answered yes to the previous question what is you favorite band or artist?

It’s been a long time since I listened to it a lot–I would say Amy Grant

4)Summer or Winter?

5)Would you rater have Christmas be in July or December?

December, I can’t imagine it in warm weather.

6)What did you dream last night?

I had a really odd dream last night–but do you think I can remember it????

7)What are your plans for the summer?

Not a whole lot, we are hoping to go to a Renaissance Faire in a few weeks, hubby isn’t on vacation until October

8)Lemonade, iced tea, or both?

I like both!

9)What was your breakfast this morning?

Same thing it is just about every morning–a huge glass of chocolate milk

10)What is your favorite thing to take pictures of?

Fireworks!!! I LOVE taking pics of them, I learned how to do it back when film was still popular, what I wouldn’t have given for digital back then, I think of all the rolls of film wasted. Now that I know how though, I still love it.

I’m supposed to nominate 10 people–but I’m going to cut it back to 5 because I think if we all keep doing it at 10, we’re all going to start tripping over each other if you know what I mean!!!

Julie Newman’s 70’s Time Capsule (because of the way your blog is set up, you can answer in the comments here)
Cozy Comforts and Dolls
The Dolls Between Us
Mommy’s Doll Club
Tea Time With Melody Q

And MY questions:

1) Besides blogging, what other things do you like to do on the internet?
2) Why did you start a doll blog?
3) What doll don’t you have that you would most like to have?
4) Your favorite American Girl doll accessory?
5) Your favorite Non-American Girl doll accessory?
6) Do you play any instruments and if so, what?
7) Favorite type of music to listen to?
8) Tea or Coffee?
9) Favorite Movie?
10) If money were no object, where would you most like to travel to?

Have fun!

When bad things happen to good dolls…

As I’ve mentioned before, I regularly peruse Ebay and Etsy to see what I can find for my dolls. Unfortunately on Ebay, it seems like anymore I have to weed through an awful lot of junk. Etsy isn’t quite as bad, but even there, once in a while, something completely bizarre turns up. One day I was looking and came across a listing that sparked an idea–wouldn’t this make a hilarious blog post? You know, kind of like those clips that Marv Albert used to show from different sports outtakes?

So, be sure that you’ve finished swallowing that last drink you took before you continue on. No seriously–these are really either hilarious or just completely…gross for some folks. Okay, done swallowing?

These posts fall into several categories: Scale issues, Gross and Just Plain Bizarre…

Innocently enough I’d started this particular morning with a search on Ebay for American Girl. I always search the “ending soonest” listings first and then check the “newly listed” ones. As I’m looking through them, this one listing just kind of stood out…

bad ebay harry potter

This is supposed to be a Harry Potter wand, but to me, it looks like she is holding a giant turd. Poopo Eructo spell anyone? (Nice try, but a swing and a miss!)

Believe me, it gets worse.

I was looking for a particular listing that I had shared with Sharry a while ago and in the process I came across this:

bad ebay etsy listing for potty chair pendant

Yeah, just what I want for a necklace, a 1/12 scale potty chair to wear around my neck. Uh, no. This one was on Etsy and usually I like what I find on Etsy. Most of the time.  Yes, someone took the time to attach a necklace bale to a doll potty.  Wow. Why don’t I just wear a toilet seat around my neck? This is just bizarre.

Sharry sent me this one. It’s not as bad as some of the ones I’ve seen, but it does have a bit of a creepy factor to it:
bad ebay doll with detached leg
I don’t have problems with selling a doll with a detached leg, it can be repaired. But that leg standing there with the cast on it is just weird. This auction included an extra outfit as well, just wondering if it came with a free exorcism too?  I always get a kick out of auction photos where the seller couldn’t be bothered to put the stuff in a location with nothing else in it.  Does the lamp behind it come with the auction?  My favorites are the ones where the room in the background looks like a tornado went through it.  Come on, I just want to see the item for sale, not your underwear in the laundry basket. (Seriously, I’ve seen that!)

A while back there was a listing on Ebay for a Sunshine Family doll that annoyed the heck out of me. Not only was it NOT the Sunshine Family mom or any other Sunshine Family doll for that matter, they had the world’s ugliest doll head on a Sunshine Family body and kept trying to pass it off as such.   They kept relisting it, over and over and over again.  I was hoping to find that one to share with you.  I couldn’t find it though.  Instead I found this:

bad ebay sunshine ichabod crane

“Yes, you too can have your very own, limited edition, Sunshine Family/Ichabod Crane/Sleepy Hollow version!” In all seriousness, they were just selling the Sunshine Family dolls for parts, but what in the world were they thinking with this horrible photograph. This is the kind of stuff that nightmares are made of!

Last, but certainly not least, is the one I said that I had sent to Sharry before. I did find it again, and I realized I hadn’t shown it to my husband. You should have heard him when I showed it to him:
bad ebay bitty baby poop

Yes, someone is trying to sell Bitty Twin sized doll poop. For $14. Yeah, you read that right. We were both like “oh dear”. But then we read the listing, and that’s when the laughter and comments got completely out of control. “This is for a set of 2 authentic doll poops.” WHAT?!?!?! You mean to say that these dolls actually do poop? Am I not feeding mine right because I am not finding any of this. My husband said that maybe you have to squeeze them really hard and it pops out? Is this what stuffing looks like after it ages? I thought only old people had an obsession with poop.  Honestly, I don’t remember the last time I laughed that hard.

You can’t make this stuff up.

Due to several requests, I would like to try and make this a regular feature on this blog. If anyone else comes across anything bizarre like this in an Ebay or Etsy listing, please send me a link to it via e-mail. Links only, no photos or otherwise because I want to check the listing out personally. No guarantee that I will use it, but you never know. My e-mail address can be found under the “about me” section. Please use the words “Bad Ebay” in the subject line so I’m sure to check it out!

Dollhouse tour, the living room

I’m posting this a day earlier than I originally had scheduled–I hope you don’t mind!

The living room has been an interesting experience, and I’ve probably looked at it in amazement more than any other room in the house. Why you ask? Because it is the only room in the dollhouse that contains absolutely NO actual doll furniture! That’s right, nearly everything in it is human stuff, repurposed for the dollhouse. I don’t think I spent a total of $20 on everything in it. Pretty cool, huh?!

That said, I’m just going to take a second to make a comment here. It was brought to my attention by a friend that there is a group of girls who are American Girl collectors who look down their noses to anything that isn’t American Girl. I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen the nasty comments some of these girls made with my own eyes. Downright mean and hateful stuff. That is just wrong. As an adult collector, I appreciate the craftsmanship of some (not all) of the American Girl pieces, and I own some of them. However, anyone can go through a catalog and buy everything that American Girl makes (if you can afford to) and furnish your dollhouse solely with that. Personally though, I totally enjoy seeing what people find that isn’t American Girl and how they incorporate it into their layouts and so forth. To me that is far more creative and shows me that this person has a brain and not just an unlimited supply of cash. Making fun of someone because they choose not to or simply can’t afford to purchase everything from American Girl is low, nasty and horrible, and I hope I never see any of my followers or any of those I follow act that way. Besides, if you have been an American Girl fan since the beginning (when it was Pleasant Company), you know that creativity was highly encouraged and they sold kits and patterns for making things on your own. For all you “Mean Girls”–go back to hanging out with the Plastics, leave the creative folks alone and keep your hateful comments to yourself.

Now that we have that out of the way, are you ready???

Here’s a view of the room.  This is another room that’s hard to photograph because of where it is, and if I ever decide to move the dollhouse, I definitely will be keeping that problem in mind!

I’m going to admit that I’m not a big fan of the sofa. Some of you may recognize that as the platform bed I made out of foamcore. I’ve never finished it by painting it or covering it because I wasn’t 100% convinced that it was going to stay in the living room. First it looks out of proportion to me, and it just doesn’t look very “sofa like”. The good news is that just this past week I did find something that I think is going to work so much better than this, I just have to make a minor change to it. I’ll be sure to share it with everyone once I have it in place.
The little side table is an empty peanut can (they were yummy!) that I covered with scrapbook paper, the lamp is a solar lamp I picked up from DollarTree.  The cushions on the sofa are ones I made and I think they are going to fit the new sofa with minimal alterations, yay!  Marie-Grace keeps her guitar here as it’s easier than dragging it upstairs, plus it always seems like she ends up playing for the girls in the living room after dinner.
The TV is one of my favorite things in this room and it was so easy to do.  It is a $2 picture frame that I picked up at Michael’s, I got the idea from American Girl Ideas.  For the screen I simply did some screen captures of some of my favorite shows and then printed them in photo size.  As you can see, the girls are watching “Big Bang Theory” at the moment! The nice part with this frame is it is two sided, so you can have one show on one side and another on the reverse making it easy to “change the channel”.  There is also room to store several photos in between as well, so I have about 5 or 6 screen shots that I can change.  Of course we have Downton Abbey and Torchwood!

The stand is a set of drawers I found at Goodwill for $4, they were brand new with the original $10 price tag still hanging on them.  At first I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with them, but I think they make a perfect living room addition.  The mug was also a thrift store find.  The Wii sitting on the floor beside it is a gift card holder I got from GameStop.  (Word of warning, DO NOT order these from them online, it was a horrible experience!  See if your store has one instead. )
Img_3975Working our way around the room, we get to the bookshelves.  I got them for $1.95 at a thrift store, I loved that they looked like a boat and at first I couldn’t decide if I would use it as a boat or a shelf–you see what won out.  They have turned into a great place to put some of the cute little accents I’ve picked up.  Again, more flowers from the Garden set I did, the Kachina doll is from my personal collection, I bought that in New Mexico back in 1994 when my bestie and I drove out to visit her dad.  The picture frames were both thrift store finds as well as the little milk jug.  I used photos from an old American Girl catalog in them, they were so small and it worked perfectly.  On the bottom shelf is my OG Picnic Basket, the only doll thing that has a permanent place in the living room!  You can’t see it very well because it is blocked by the game basket.

On the floor is a basket I found at a Goodwill, it makes a perfect place to store the Scrabble game, Apples to Apples and a deck of cards.  I hope to add a few more games to it.  The music stand is the one that Barbie Girl gave me and I added some sheet music to it by searching online for photos of sheet music and resizing it to fit before printing.  It’s all sitting on the adorable owl table I showed a few weeks ago from a thrift store run.  The chair is the vegetable bin I modified, it’s one of my favorite pieces in the whole room. (You can see that modification here.)

And there you have it! The girls spend a lot of time in here, watching TV and just hanging out together. I think it looks pretty cozy, and I can’t wait to get the new sofa in there. I need to get on that, the girls will be back before I know it!

Next week I’ll share Cassandra and Kit’s bedrooms with everyone. I’ve also been working on Alya and Shivan’s room and I’m SUPER excited on how things are coming with the bathroom, my hope is to share those rooms with you sometime in August. I do have to say that having the rooms “finished” is a nice feeling, but it does make me kind of sad. I’ve had so much fun looking for the perfect pieces for these rooms. I don’t think I’ll stop looking, but as I told my husband, it will be a case of looking for something better than what I already have in place. Yes, a new challenge!
